I never imagined we'd have so many blogfans! Thank you all for caring enough about us to follow our journey.
For the final post, I thought I'd post some of the images I sketched in my journal, along the way. I hope you enjoy them. Capturing the beauty of any place, or moment, is nearly impossible, but I always enjoy the challenge of trying.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464669842679610514" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; Each day of living brings challenges, surprises, and new joys. Each day we realize that we are not completely in control of the way the day unfolds. Traveling has reminded us of this. It has also reminded us to stay open to the possibility that something wacky might happen, open to meeting new people. It has reminded us that being vulnerable is okay, as long as we're also resourceful. It has certainly given us new perspectives. We feel so blessed to be exploring this awe-inspiring planet, and plan to continue doing so.

Thank you to those who helped make the trip happen, and to those who were interested enough to follow along. We are soooo excited to catch up with all of you, and will be in touch.

Stay tuned for more blog reflections....

Love,

Jess & RyanJessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-26380419076502310942010-04-11T19:00:00.005-06:002010-04-13T16:10:03.931-06:00Wrapping it up in SantiagoHi everyone.
The previous post, of our final days at the beach (below) is much more exciting. This is just a note to tell you all that we are finally, really, heading home TONIGHT!!! We have spent the last few days here in Santiago dealing with the business of selling El Furgon. While parting with our home on wheels was slightly sad, we are, of course, thrilled to have sold it without difficulty. It worked out just how we had hoped. We have had some time here, also, to enjoy the sites in Santiago. My personal highlights have included art museums, running a part of the Santiago marathon, and conversations with Chileans along the way. The city is much much more bustling now than it was back in February, so we are pretty ready to leave the hustle.
We are currently anticipating a smooth 26 hours of travel, back to Eugene, and will be sure to be in touch with all ya´ll when we arrive.
Don´t worry, I have some follow-up blogging to do when we get home. This is not the final entry (ha, ha, HA!).
Love to you all.
Jess and RyanJessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-54685422716633603092010-04-11T18:53:00.005-06:002010-04-13T16:01:07.841-06:00Leaving the Playa
Waves, waves, waves, waves, waves...

Our final days on the coast, here in Chile, were powerful indeed. We visited a wave that Ryan had heard about, and the surfing exceeded his expectations by a lot. The scenery exceeded our expectations as well; it was relatively near Santiago, but still very remote. The hike to reach the wave was pretty intense, so we got a lot of exercise each day. We were lucky to befriend a local surfer who was willing to give us rides down the road to the beach, which happened to be one of the most intense four-wheel-drive roads we had ever experienced.

For El Furgon, the road stopped here. The surf wave breaks off that point, so you can see it was quite a hike in.

Horses work better than Furgones on this road. They are transporting dried, packaged seaweed, called "Cochayuyos," which Chileans like to eat.

So, we are glad to report that our final days on the coast in Chile were fulfilling in many ways. As planned, we left Buchupureo with aspirations of exploring the mountains in this part of Chile. Essentially, we found what we sought, which was the beauty of the mountains. Unfortunately, we mainly saw them from a distance because the parks were closed. We even had overnight packs loaded--camping gear, premade meals, warm clothes, etc.--on our backs and were denied entry at the gate of the second park we tried.
What we eventually realized was that it was for our own good. We learned this as we were leaving the park by foot, along the road that had been closed due to rockfall and waterflow. We stopped for a few minutes to enjoy a tall, lightly-trickling water fall. We sat below it, took some photos, soaked in the sun. Then, as we were walking away down the road, we happened to look back in that direction. The clear, ephemeral, trickle had been replaced by a brown, frothing torrent of water.

At the least, we would have gotten very wet where we had been sitting. Considering this a suitable reminder that things happen for a reason, and that it was time for us to move on, we quickly hiked through the rock slides and, later that day, high-tailed it back to the coast.

So, here we are back in the region surrounding Buchupureo. For example, this morning our battery died, but we ended up meeting an awesome truckload of Chileans as a result. Right now we are sitting in the internet cafe where, before the terremoto, we made the decision to leave the coast. It has reopened after almost a month closed. There are cracks in the walls but the computers and the cappuccino machine are working. The town is being rebuilt all around us. It is actually quite surreal.
We plan to spend the next week working our way north along the coast, and then back to Santiago. You'll know when we get there.
Lots of love to all,
Jess & Ryan

Jessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-9644320604176901332010-03-28T10:41:00.006-07:002010-03-28T11:15:45.122-07:00Buchu Dayz

Hi everyone,

We hope you are enjoying hints of spring, wherever you are. The walls are almost two feet thick! In this case, the whole front wall of the house split off the rest of the structure. We are thinking about you, Mom,and love you immensely. We are glad you were born, (I won't say howmanyyears ago:) Happy Birthday!!! For those of you who haven't already heard the news directly from Oregon, we want to inform you that Kimmy and Randy gave birth to a "perfect" baby boy yesterday afternoon. His name is Oliver Michael Kenyon and, to quote his beautiful mother, "He is perfect." We had the privilege of connecting with them in the nursery last night, via Skype, with video!!! Ryan and I stood speachless, watching little Oliver wriggle in his bed, using wireless technology. It was all completely surreal: seeing Oliver outside of Kimmy's belly; witnessing the radiance emanating from the new parents; catching it all live through video feed, in Chile. Wonders never cease.

Another timely reminder that life is precious, and that every day is the first day of the rest of our lives.

Beaming love,

Tia Jess and Tio Loco

Jessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-51095430132801860932010-03-19T11:17:00.005-07:002010-03-19T12:22:12.170-07:00New Friends
Hi friends and family,
While there is not a whole lot that is new to report, since I last wrote, I thought I'd post an update so you would know we are alive and well, here, in still-quaking Chile. Yes, the tremors (called temblores, in Spanish) are still happening daily, but they are pretty mellow and rarely cause alarm. Any building or road that survived the 8.8 three weeks ago certainly holds strong for a minor tremor! It sounds odd, I'm sure, but we have grown accustomed to them.
We are staying in a cabin in the town of Buchupureo and have continued to enjoy our time here, including the surf, helping out, making new friends, and learning Spanish. LJ has been kind enough to give us some more structured Spanish instruction lately. That, combined with immersion in conversations with the families we have befriended, means that Ryan and I both are feeling our progress with speaking and understanding Spanish.
As you began to see in the photos I posted last week, most of the work we have been doing here has involved deconstruction of damaged homes. Yesterday we went to a new level, I think, when we tore out the ceiling boards of Pepe & Irene's house and ended up covered from head to toe, including every orifice, in the dust that has been accumulating under their roof tiles for 50 years. Besides the pleasure I've gained from learning a new skill --how to use a crow-bar--we feel so good about helping them salvage building materials that they will be able to use to rebuild.
While Pepe & Irene and their families have continued to show us their gratitude by inviting us into their homes for amazing lunches, their grandkids have also welcomed us at their waves. I am biting at the bit to post photos of this amazing experience, but as I am in someone´s living room right now, it doesn´t seem appropriate to pull out the camera and go through that whole process. Suffice to say, for now, that we have been on a path of one amazing experience unfolding into the next, and then another, and then another.
A few days ago, when we were delivering plastic to some camps, our visit happened to coincide with the arrival of three Chilean helicopters that were delivering supplies. I can´t even begin to describe how beautiful it was to be a part of so many people helping so many people.
Yesterday, we helped an elderly couple here in Buchupureo salvage the wood floor and keepsakes from their adobe home, because they have to tear it down. Turns out their grandsons are two of the six local surfers, who today showed Ryan and LJ some hidden waves in the area. That young man and two friends are currently at our cabin preparing an 'asado' (BBQ).
Today, I went to the farm of a 78-year-old woman to help her remove whatever she could keep from her house, which also will be torn down. I worked with her grand-nieces (20 & 13), which was fun because we spoke spanish together and were able to laugh and play a bit. There are so many details I want to share, but I think I will wait....
We have been invited to eat lunch, which is the big meal of the day, tomorrow at the house of the family we have been helping. They want to share the corn we harvested today, and to thank us. How beautiful!
We have engagements to help lined up for tomorrow and the next day: other people who are trying to move out of houses before tearing them down. It feels so good to have time and energy to help here.
On a different note, we are thinking so much about Kimmy, who is full with baby love, and ready to burst. Stay tuned for an upcoming 'It´s a .....!`We are so excited, and are going to share that joy with our blogfans, too. Stay tuned.
Thank you to everyone who is wanting to contribute to our efforts to help down here. For now, simply understand that your supportive thoughts are fueling our desire to help. You are helping to motivate us, and we appreciate that immensely.
I will try to post a more illustrative entry when I have a slightly more private venue. Until then, know we are thriving in the Epic-Center.
Lots of love,
Jess, Ryan, and LJJessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-30215282963591624932010-03-07T12:27:00.002-07:002010-03-07T13:18:59.803-07:00Epic-centerHi everyone,
We have returned to Chillan to gather another load of supplies to take to the coast. Our first trip out there felt successful. We basically just loaded El Furgon with supplies that we anticipated or heard might be useful--water, milk, rice, cooking oil, cleaning supplies, carrots, onions, potatoes, matches, toilet paper, etc.--and drove around the rural areas south of the town of Cobquecura visiting camps and offering what we had.
What we found was that the homes built of brick (home-made brick) have been badly damaged, and families who lived in them have had to evacuate. Many families are tent-camping in fields or yards of family members. Each camp is marked with a flag, and most have signs that say the family name and the number of people staying there. I suppose this is to help people who are bringing aid. We have been impressed by the mobilization of Chileans to help their people. Trucks loaded with supplies are heading out to the coast all the time, but some areas & towns are definitely receiving more than others. This is one reason it felt great to help in outlying rural areas, because the small towns along the coast seem to have received more help.
What is good news is that the area we have been in was not further devastated by the tidal wave which followed the earthquake in other parts of the coast. I haven´t quite figured out the reason for this, but it is clear that the water did not reach the coastal homes. Still, it is/was at the epicenter, so there was a lot of damage from the quake itself.
The people we have encountered have been gracious--always only taking what they need, and pointing the way to another family, in another camp farther down the road who need it more than they do. They have been grateful and respectably proud. Their beauty, strength, and resiliance are evidence that they will persevere. It is inspiring.
The current concern is that there is rain in the forecast and the camps are very exposed to the elements. After this, we will head to the hardware stores looking for plastic sheeting, tarps, nails, etc. to help people build temporary shelters. This is what they are asking for, so we are trying our best to help make it happen.
I am having trouble with the photos right now, so they will have to wait.
We will be in touch next chance we get.
Thank you for all of your thoughts.
Jessica & RyanJessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-20357952339246700042010-03-05T05:27:00.002-07:002010-03-05T05:37:52.778-07:00New visionsHi all.
A new plan for the rest of our trip is emerging, and we feel good about it. Together with our friend LJ, we have decided to load El Furgon with supplies and head to a few of the smaller towns along the coast that we became acquainted with on the way down here. We have a few contacts--both with local people we previously met, and with organizations that are working down here--which will be helpful when we get over there. Our intention is to help in whatever way we can.
Right now, we are back in Pucon. We returned here to pick up LJ and get everything squared away. Yesterday we built a rack inside El Furgon, so we will have more space for materials. We have heard the most useful items are water, non-perishable foods, etc., so that is what we will be gathering today. Our goal is to leave Pucon this afternoon, drive north a bit, and then head out to the coast, via Chillan, to Cobquecura and Buchupureo.
We will do our best to keep in touch, but it may be difficult once we are there. Please know that we are being cautious and planful, and that we have chosen to help in these places because they are full of kind-hearted, peaceful people.
We love you and are grateful for your love and support.
Jess & RyanJessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-11431061639762310032010-03-02T08:56:00.003-07:002010-03-02T09:40:04.301-07:00The story continues to unfoldHi everyone.
Wow. Our blog has suddenly attracted a lot of ¨regulars.¨ We love your comments, and appreciate all of your thoughts.
As I said in the last entry, it would be interesting to see what we find as we continue our travels. What we have found has been interesting, and ¨sobering.¨ We had definitely underestimated the effects of this earthquake. First, let me say that we are completely safe and healthy, even finding ways to enjoy ourselves. Chile, on the other hand, is definitely in a state of disarray. The information we have been gathering is probably similar to what you might be seeing on the news. In the north, there is much damage to infrastructure: roads are broken, the airport is closed, trucking is suspended, people have been displaced from their homes, or worse.
We are currently in Valdivia, which is a university/tourist/river town tucked in back from the ocean approximately 15 km. In these bigger towns in the south there are long lines for gasoline; the supermarkets´stocks are low; some ATMs are working, and many aren´t; the beginning of the school year (usually March 1) has been delayed by a week; some of the summer´s last vacationers are still stuck here because they can´t get back to Santiago and other cities north of here; there is some damage to a few buildings, but the roads are clear and people are generally going about their business. The rural areas seem largely unaffected.
How this all affects us? So far, minimally (I am hesitant to even mention it, compared to the grave effects suffered by others). We are dragging our heels a bit, here in the south, because going north doesn´t seem like a smart choice. We will have to alter our course for the rest of the trip, because the surf towns we were planning to visit next were basically at the epicenter of the quake, and have suffered a lot of damage (especially to their waterfronts). It´s crazy, even as I sit here, Ryan is researching the damage to some of the towns we passed through on our way south, which we were planning to revisit in this next month. What we are finding is that those towns are a mess. Some completely leveled. It looks like, in the next few days, we will be revising our vision for the rest of the trip, based on all this new info.
For obvious reasons, we have no complaints about any of this. We feel lucky for a thousand reasons: we were in the safest imaginable place during the quake; we are mostly self-sufficient in El Furgón; we don´t have a flight to catch, don´t have an immediate schedule. We have many options. The coast, here, is beautiful. The mountains are beautiful. We may even be able to find ways to help... We´ll be looking.
We will, as always, keep you posted on our whereabouts.
With love and deep, deep gratitude,
Jess and RyanJessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-10566707455702402712010-02-28T06:31:00.002-07:002010-02-28T07:27:58.214-07:00Shaken, not stirred....Hi everyone. Thank you for your concern regarding our wellbeing. We are better than good, with stories to tell.
When the earth began it´s trembling, the night before last, we were snuggled into El Furgòn at our friend´s land outside Pucón. When I first awoke, my groggy mind thought, ¨someone is shaking the van!?¨Then I awoke Ryan, thinking, ¨maybe a big bear is shaking the van!?¨Neither of those first two were logical explanations, so we slowly realized that what we were feeling was a real-live earthquake. El Furgón was vigorously shaking and rocking on her suspension.
We began assessing our situation. With our heads raised off our pillows, we were looking out the open back door of the van at the surrounding landscape. The big tree in our view was shaking and bending as if moved by a strong wind, but the trees near us were small and unthreatening. We were near the river, but far enough away and on high enough ground that we felt safe. We were basically parked in the middle of a wide, flat meadow, immediately surrounded by immature trees. We couldn´t have been in a safer place. Realizing this, we were able to actually enjoy and marvel at the movements of the earth´s crust. Holy shit! It was amazing. The ground shook vigorously for a few minutes. That´s a long time. The trees were swaying and bending like they´d been in training for such a challenge. El Furgón heaved and rocked, jolted and swayed. Every bird and dog in the countryside was cawing or barking, and we just felt, watched, listened, awestruck, until it subsided.

This is where we were parked during El Terremoto.

There were many after-shocks, too. When we returned to town in the morning, we were curious about what we would find. We didn´t know if it was a big earthquake or a small one. We didn´t know anything except our experience.

Pucón appeared to be unscathed, despite a lack of electricity. Many of the Chileans, however, were pretty rattled. A lot of the people who vacation here come from the region around Concepción, which was the epicenter, from what I understand. We found out that we had experienced a 7.0 earthquake here, and that it was an 8.5 at the center. Almost unbelievable. Most of the businesses stayed closed. People were rapidly leaving town, despite it being Saturday morning. The lines for gas ultimately made us decide to stay in Pucón another day, rather than heading south toward the coast, which had been our plan.

The amazing thing is that we had a wonderful day. Our friends who work on the river didn´t have to work (oddly, it had a ¨snow-day¨vibe). The weather was as clear and warm and calm as it has been (all summer, according to them). By the end of the day, we were referring to it as ¨Earth Day¨because the earth had, once again, stopped us all in our tracks and reminded us to appreciate her beauty, and her power.

Hanging out on Lago Villarica with the kayaking boys. Today, we visited a staircasing series of waterfalls and rapids that our friends here like to kayak, and then soaked in gorgeous hot springs next to the Liucura River.

Yesterday, we hiked in a private nature preserve that was created to protect old-growth forest and, in the afternoon, went kayaking in inflatable boats called ¨duckies.¨ Ha!, Go Duckies! The river (Rio Liucura flowing into the Trancura) was breathtakingly beautiful, with views of the snow-capped Volcan Villarica, and heart-quickening rapids: so much FUN! It definitely got my adrenaline going! (Stay tuned for photos that the guide company took. I´ll add them when I get them.)
Generally, we have been enjoying seeing this dynamic landscape from the perspective of our friends here who kayak big rivers, including very tall waterfalls. It is truly a different perspective on nature. We hope you enjoy the visuals!

Last night was my favorite campspot so far: just a flat dirt lot right on the beach with a view of the point at Buchupureo (see photo, above). This spot has waves sometimes, but didn´t really while we were there. It was simply a quiet and peaceful night in El Furgon. We saw the crescent moon rise. We had a guest (Rick, traveling solo, cardiolist from New Mexico) over for drinks and an evening snack. We ate by candlelight.

Now we are in a tiny, historic town called Cobquecura, which was apparently founded in the early 1500s but has houses that are even older than that. Many of the houses are built with slate-like stone and roofed with Spanish tiles. Beautiful. I will try to snap a few photos to post.

We are in the process of deciding whether to continue south along the coast, or to head inland toward Pucon. We will let you all know when we decide. In either case, know we will be enjoying the journey.

We are sending you all lots of love. Please pay it forward :)

Love,

Jess and Ryan
Jessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-37956918117090231322010-02-15T12:15:00.004-07:002010-02-17T09:10:36.561-07:00Ryan´s update
Constitucion had great surf and beautiful hiking.
Our camping spot near Constitucion was in a small, low-key campground right by the ocean.

Giant rock formations near Constitucion.

Fishing boats on the beach in a town called Duao.

We bought fish called Reineta at this fish market. Life on the road is great we have found really cool spots to camp, cooked somthing from the sea everynight for dinner and it seems like there is a left point break aroud every corner. I have had some really good surf, and met some really cool chilean surfers. The country side is amazing, think southern Oregon coast. There will be a saw mill then a cool little town, 20 miles of beautiful coast and another town, with potential surf spots everywhere. The wind has blown out of the south everyday plenty to kite and there are miles of beach for that, truely an amazing place. The sea food is incredible mussles, clams, oysters, shrimp, salmon, sea bass, and as much as you can eat. El furgon is the bomb great little diesle van, the locales see very few gringos especially ones living out of a furgon. The folks around here are amazing super friendly and beautiful. We have been talking tons of spanish every opprotunity we get, it feels so good to be finally getting my arms around it.. Well life is good... Here is an invatation, we have el furgon, the gas is paid for tell us when you fly in and we will pick you up.... The surfing conditions weren´t great, but we had fun camping and exploring the area. The region we are in (Pichilemu) is a prime vacation spot for Chileans and other South Americans, and it is their peak summer right now, so we have been enjoying being part of that experience.
The terrain here is interesting. The beaches have black, volcanic sand. The vegetation is mixed: succulents like in Santa Cruz, Calif., cacti, and also lots of trees of all kinds. The weather, yesterday, was like the Oregon coast in the summer, with a thin marine layer, but also sunbursts. We have been wearing long sleeves and, at night, our Dody caps :). It is beautiful all around.
El Furgon is proving to be a comfortable home and a trusty vehicle. We have gone approximately 250 km, covering first downtown Santiago, then a section of the Panamerican highway, some smaller country roads, and a small mountain pass over the coastal hills. The diesel engine seems to be pretty efficient, and it handles the road gracefully. We feel very good about our purchase.
We have some great photos, so I am a bit disappointed that I haven´t found an internet cafe that has computers compatible with our camera, but oh well. I will keep looking when we are in towns.
Today we will head farther south along the beach, toward Constitucion. We will be looking for good surf and enjoying the journey. We hope you, too, are enjoying your journey.
From the Latin land down-under,
Jess and Ryan

Jessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-12258883596956997512010-02-09T05:58:00.008-07:002010-02-17T08:34:58.032-07:00Wheels
The view from our hostal, of the Argentinian embassy.
In the Plaza de Armas: the cathedral next to a modern building.

One beautiful station in Santiago´s awesome metro system. When I say surprisingly enjoyable, I mean wonderful, really. Today, Ryan said that this is ¨The best city experience [he has] ever had.¨Being here has, once again, reminded us of the fallacy of the myth that suggests U.S. superiority over Latin/South America. Santiago is a very modern-yet-down-to-earth city, with very kind people, beautiful art and parks, clean & efficient public transportation (awesome subway), great weather, views of snow-capped mountains, great roads & signs, etc. Everywhere we have gone, people have welcomed and helped us.
Buying a car has been a fun challenge. Our search has taken us to all corners of the city; at the end of each day Ryan asks, ¨How many miles do you think we´ve walked today?¨and we like to think it´s around 10 (probably a slight exaggeration:).
We have joked that we are in the midst of a Spanish language program and our recent homework assignment is to research buying a car: government offices, forms, very big numbers, car parts, and not to mention getting around the city. Our Spanish is definitely improving, and we are having an easier time understanding the Castillian version of Spanish spoken here. Today we feel like we passed the Spanish final exam. We have officially purchased a Hyundai H1, which is a cargo van. We have named the van ¨El Furgon¨(pronounced fu-GON) because we had to say that word a thousand times to find a suitable van, and because it sounds cool in Spanish, and because it means, well....¨van¨. Ha!
We are sooooo excited to head out of town en El Furgon, and we feel ready--camp kitchen, maps, surf gear, bedding: check! The plan is to go as early tomorrow as possible, and head toward Pichilemu. We will check in again when we find an internet cafe in our next location.
We love you all, with whole hearts,
Jess and Ryan
P.S. After trying to post photos from our camera, using three different internet cafes, I decided to go ahead and post this without the photos, but plan to keep trying...Stay tuned for photos. :)

Jessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5897664487625396746.post-551505909060097782010-02-05T03:07:00.002-07:002010-02-05T03:09:12.748-07:00We´re in Chile!!!Hi everyonewhocares...
We have officially arrived in Santiago, Chile, after a seamless overnight flight. Even with the slow pace, we have been able to do a lot in the short time we have been here. For me, and I think Ryan would agree, the highlights have been connecting with the unique cast of characters who live, work, and vacation in this region. For example, our friend Dave had a party the other night and it was attended by people from Germany, Italy, Canada, Costa Rica, Poland, and I don´t know where else... The lingua franca is more Spanish, here, than English, which we appreciate because we love practicing every chance we get. I love the challenge of trying to have a conversation in Spanish with someone whose first language is Italian; we end up with SpanItalIsh, rather than the usual ¨Spanglish.¨What fun!

Another highlight occurred on Friday, when our friends Francesco and Laurie took us hiking by Rio Celeste. Francesco and Laurie are wonderful; he´s from Italy and she´s from Toronto. They are part-owners of the most amazing inn called Mystica, here. Laurie is a Reiki healer, both are yogis, beautiful people. They´ve been taking very good care of us :)

Waterfall at Rio Celeste/ Hiking with Francesco and Laurie

We hiked in to the waterfall, then beside the river to a natural hot tub. There, we swam in a pool that was heated by bubbling hot gases coming from within the volcanic earth. It was a very strange sensation, to feel (and smell) the hot bubbles moving through the cold river. We joked that we were swimming in Mother Nature´s farts! Somehow, it was still magical. We got here nearly a week ago, already, and have been enjoying spacious, windy, reflective days at the house by Lake Arenal. This place truly inspires reflection. It has been six and a half years since we were last here, when we were running BlueAcademy, and around 15 years since Ryan first found Lake Arenal. It has felt special to have this time to reflect on the time that has passed since then. Ryan has particularly enjoyed reconnecting with friends he made down here in those early years, windsurfing, and going on long runs. I have particularly enjoyed yoga with a view, every day, on the deck at the house; painting; practicing the violin; and visiting with those same friends. (We´ll post some photos of people next time.) There is something magical here, in this valley between volcanos, something charged riding on the wind. It is somewhat surreal, really.
Like I said, this is just a quick update. I will write again in the next week with some more illustrative photos.
Until then, be well!
Jess and Ryan

Jessica Landhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05617914171994478671noreply@blogger.com3
